Conrad's Birth Story...

My baby is two months old today! His birth story has taken me multiple hours over the course of what has seemed like weeks to prepare. (Life is busy!) It was my goal to get it done today, and would you know it....setting goals works *smile. It was one of the best days of my life, and I'd love to share it with you.
--------------------

Conrad's birth story is very different from Gwendolyn's and at the same time, quite similar. Both were intense, exciting, emotional, and beautiful. I felt less prepared for Conrad's in that we hadn't taken a class and I hadn't read multiple books on having a natural birth, but it all came flooding back to me like I had. It's truly amazing what our bodies are capable of and my prayers were answered for a speedy labor and delivery. It's not lost on us that having a healthy baby placed in our arms is no small miracle and such a gift from God.

He was due on April 26th. I had had several signs that perhaps he would make his arrival a bit early so every day basically from April 4th on, I was amazed when I woke up still pregnant. No cramping or contractions though through any of it, so the wait continued and we were just thankful for the extra time to finish editing client galleries, completing our taxes and preparing his room. As you may remember from this post, I had some surrendering of anxiety and fear that I had to do.

Once I was caught up on everything that felt crucial, it felt like weight had been lifted off my shoulders and Gwendolyn and I just enjoyed our last days together doing all sorts of fun things. "Last days together." That sounds like something ended, but really a whole new chapter began and I've only grown more in love with that little girl since then. Our time together never ended...it's only been enhanced.

With 28 being my favorite number, I was secretly hoping he'd make his arrival on that day; however, I woke up on Sunday feeling completely fine and normal for being 40 weeks and 2 days pregnant. And somewhat bummed nothing had happened in the middle of the night. We went to church as normal and served in the infant room nursery. I still felt absolutely no signs that today would be the day. We ate lunch and I had a weird feeling in my stomach - but didn't feel like cramping - at 3:30 pm while I was trying to take a nap. Of course, my labor with Gwendolyn started with cramping so I was assuming that's what would come first with Conrad's labor as well.

I had two more within 30 minutes and finally said something to Tom a little after 4:00. I called my doula and awesome friend, Diedra, at 4:43 explaining what I had felt but that "it could be nothing". She told me to listen to my body, get something to eat, and keep her posted. And just in case, Tom called John and Trisha who were going to watch Gwendolyn. They didn't answer (no reception where they were...which was 45 minutes away), but that wasn't cause for concern at the time because I genuinely thought we still had hours to go.

It was finally a beautiful day so we headed outside and I labored in the courtyard for awhile while Gwendolyn played and Tom started making trips to the car with our bags and extra blankets. He was in total "go" mode and I still was just chillin' thinking it could be false labor or even if it were real labor, we still had a few hours to labor at home. I called my mom and sister around 5:15 pm and while chatting with Becca I had one pretty strong contraction that I couldn't even talk through. I told her I still needed to pack a few things, but that I wanted to go on a walk and she told me that if I couldn't even talk through my contractions, I needed to go inside and pack up my toiletries first. I told her it was fiiiiine. She told me I was having a baby that day and reminded me that I was going to be giving Gwendolyn the best present ever in a younger sibling. I am glad I listened to her and Tom because it's incredible what all transpired during those 20 minutes upstairs! I went from feeling like I could be in labor to full on - intense contractions every couple of minutes - labor. Tom was downstairs trying to feed Gwendolyn (who, by the way, was being a pistol) dinner and finish loading the car. He was tracking my contractions on an app on his phone, so I was yelling down to him every time I'd have another one. They were getting closer and closer and I barely had any time to do anything in between them. One would stop, I'd grab a few things and throw them in my bag and another one would start. This was officially the real deal and I finally felt a sense of urgency. I got nauseous so Tom raced upstairs to grab the bucket, but thankfully I never got sick. What a relief to have the nausea pass.

He had finally gotten a hold of Trisha and John and thankfully they were back in Woodbury after having been at his parent's house 45 minutes away. (They moved the day before!) We headed downstairs and Trisha raced (literally) over. As she was walking in the door, I was leaning up against the cabinet in our kitchen in the middle of a contraction that seemed to last for-ever. I thought for sure my water was going to break right then and there and here I was wearing my brand new sneakers. Finally it ended and the sneakers were safe! I was hot and sweating and dreading the car ride to the hospital, but knew we had to go asap. Tom called the midwife labor line to let them know I was in labor at 5:58 and Diedra at 6:02 to let her know we were headed out the door.

Thankfully the ride to the hospital was somewhat uneventful. I made it with only a few fairly minor contractions and no nausea. An ER nurse met us there with a smile on her face and we made our way upstairs making small talk on the way. Very small talk since I couldn't get out more than a few words. The elevator doors opened on the maternity floor and who do I see but the same nurse who helped deliver Gwendolyn! She was going to be our nurse again - I was so pumped!

We checked in and ended up finding out that our call to the labor line wasn't ever properly transferred to the on call midwife so no one knew we were in labor. They let us know they'd have a midwife there as soon as possible and we started walking down the hall to the triage room so they could monitor me and see how far along I was. While on the way I mentioned that I wanted to do a water birth, and thankfully they said the water birth suite was available! I overheard Erin tell the nursing student shadowing her that she thought I was probably at a 5.

Well, when I was checked a few minutes later Erin said, "hmmm, all I feel is the bag of water. You're at a 9." A NINE. Ok, here we go! However, I had to wait for the midwife to get there to make sure I didn't have any meconium in my amniotic fluid before I could get into the water. Thankfully I wasn't having any urge to push at this point, so I was never concerned that the midwife wouldn't make it in time. Diedra and my friend and photographer, Angela, both arrived while I was being monitored. I remember looking at the clock and seeing that it said 6:25 pm.

They eventually wheeled me to the water birth suite. We continued waiting for my midwife to arrive and in the meantime a doctor came in to introduce herself, just in case she would have to deliver the baby. I just following the advice of Diedra to "sink into the bed" when a contraction would come, take lots of deep breaths, and relax when I was in between them. Diedra was great help and encouragement. Erin told me that once my water broke the baby was going to come right out. I still just couldn't believe we were that close because I pushed for over an hour and a half with Gwendolyn and was only beginning to feel a slight urge to push at this point.

My midwife arrived right around 7:00 pm - praise the Lord! I was so happy to see her! She told me to tell her when my next contraction was over because they were going to quickly break my water, see if there was any meconium in the amniotic fluid and if not, immediately get me over to the tub. She broke my water at 7:09 and Tom and Diedra helped me get up and walk over to the tub. I tried being on my knees through a set of contractions, but didn't feel as comfortable so changed positions. Like clockwork, I felt like pushing! I could tell when his head was through but suddenly lost my contraction and had no urge to push. Even with my eyes closed, I could sense the sudden urgency in the voices coming at me saying, "you need to push, Sarah. You have to get this baby out. Put your chin down, Sarah." They grabbed my legs and following their advice, I put my chin down, gave it everything I had despite feeling completely clueless (it's amazing how much I depend on those contractions to guide me through the delivery process) and at 7:26 pm they placed Conrad Cross in my arms.

I felt instant love at first sight as our new son just looked me in the eyes and wasn't even crying. He gripped my fingers tightly and they jiggled him a bit to get him to make some noise. His forehead was wrinkly and he was so bright eyed - I was just immediately in awe of him and so thankful that he had arrived safe and sound. He was beautiful and so calm and peaceful, which has remained the case even two months later.

We started making phone calls around 9:00 to share the news, took our first bath together once we got back to our room and slept like champs that night. (It's true!) The next morning was one of the most joyous mornings of my life - Tom and I were on cloud nine and the three of us had such a great time in the hospital. I knew Gwendolyn was being well cared for at home and the attention and care they provided me at the hospital was just awesome. From lavender sea salt baths to fresh fruit muffins and fabulous coffee - it was kind of like staying in a hotel. Gwendolyn came later that afternoon with my parents to meet her new baby brother, which was such a sweet moment. We were happy to get home the following day, but we really enjoyed ourselves and our new son - it's a time I'll treasure forever.

And that is Conrad's birth story. Four hours start to finish. Definitely intense, but so amazing at the same time. We're so thankful for the gift that he is to us and the way he has already changed our family for the better. He came quickly and peacefully and straight from the hands of God.

Conrad - 8 Weeks

Hey everybody! I'm eight weeks old today, which means I'm almost two whole months old! It's really fun being eight weeks. Let me tell you all about it!

• Mommy says I'm full of joy and smile with my whole face. I raise my eyebrows, wrinkle up my nose, and grin really big. I think my smiles make her really happy, which makes me happy. In fact, sometimes I smile for no reason. I'm just happy to be here guys...

• It seems people are having a hard time believing I'm only eight weeks. Someone guessed that I was seven months old. Now, I get that I'm a bit chunky and tall for my age but SEVEN months?!

• I'm really starting to talk and coo more - it's nice to finally have a voice around here.

• Mommy is telling everyone how sweet of a baby I am. Of course, I won't disagree with her. She says I'm calm and content and love to just look around, I am a rock star eater, and to top it all off - I have been consistently sleeping between 4-5 hours the first stretch at night! I make it pretty obvious when I'm tired (even have started rubbing my eyes) and after a bit of jiggling, off I go to sleepy land. Take a look at this track record...

June 17th - 4 hours
June 18th - 5 hours and 10 minutes
June 19th - 4 hours and 50 minutes
June 20th - 4 hours
June 21st - 4 hours and 25 minutes
June 22nd - 4 hours and 30 minutes

I'm going down anywhere between 9:30 and 11:30, but mommy says 10:30 is preferable. (Sheesh...picky, picky!)

• Back to how sweet I am though...it's very true. Mommy and daddy are always saying "I can't believe he's just sitting there" or "I can't believe he falls asleep so easily" or this and that. I appreciate the compliments and I'll try to keep up the good work.

• The days of my 0-3 month onesies have come to an end.

• My hair is already coming back in and mommy says my peach fuzz is super soft! She's always kissing my head. And face. And tummy.

• I actually really like baths for the most part. They're very relaxing if my parents can time them right.

• Sissy goes to daycare one day a week so I get to stay home with mommy. She's back to work with her photography business so we snuggle and she works while I sleep.

• The weather's been a bit iffy around here lately. We survived two nights without power (came back on both times thankfully) and lots of loud thunder. I wasn't scared though and slept through it all.

• I've been getting lots of mail! I think I could get used to getting presents. Cards, clothes, blankets, DVDs to share with my sissy, ISU gear, gift cards, and even a beautiful engraved frame. I am well loved!

• I took my first bottle like a champ this past week! Daddy loved giving it to me and mommy says she feels free!

Well, hope you all enjoyed your weekend. Thanks for swinging by!

Oh, and don't worry...I decided to wake up...

Love,
Conrad Cross

May in Pictures

May 2013 will go down in the books as one of the most exciting, crazy, exhausting, emotional, fun, challenging months of my life. We brought home a baby, said good-bye to family, and started the journey of being a family of four. FOUR! There has not been one dull moment since our little Conrad Cross arrived on April 28th.
(I'm going to post some dates so that I can remember when these were taken.)

Gwendolyn adores her baby brother. Conrad at only 4 days old and mommy running on complete adrenaline and love.
Hangin' with Grammy. My mom was incredible help!
Now hangin' with Grandpa.
I'm not sure why, but she gathers all of her things after she wakes up and is waiting for someone to come get her. Always the collector!
Meeting Auntie Natalie for the first time - May 2nd.
After his doctor's appointment...I think we were both relieved it was over!
Taken the morning of May 4th - 7 days old!
I know I'll look back on these pictures and think - we slept with diapers and wipes and giant pillows in our bed for how long?! And this is how we still look most mornings. Except he's outgrown that sleeper and I don't smile that easily so bright and early anymore *smile.
Wearing as many of his newborn outfits while he can still fit in them. They're all adorable hand me downs, so it was perfect that the temps cooled off so he could wear his cozy velour pants!
Sunday, May 5th - Conrad is one week old and went to church for the first time. John Piper spoke that Sunday and it was so great. Do you know John Piper? If not, he's an amazing man and author and I'm sure all of his books are life changing. Tom and I both love the Desiring God blog - would highly recommend it!

It was so great to hear him preach, but also quite incredible to have him pray over our newborn son and family afterwards. Goosebumps!
Meeting Mimi and Papa for the first time at one week old. Also the last time we were in Eden Prairie before Greg, Natalie and family moved back to Ohio. Boohoohoo.
Watch out for those muscles....
A man with his son...
I adore this picture. Tom took it without my knowing before he left for work when Conrad was a week and one day old, and I'm so glad it's captured forever. Those first days were so sweet and he and I are still pretty inseparable. I still love how he snuggles right up in my neck. Pretty sure I'd never get sick of it!
Off we go to Hastings for a play date with cousin, Natron and to see Aunt Nikki!
After my parents headed home, Mimi and Papa arrived to help out the troops. What a blessing it was to have help for two weeks!
I still can't keep my hands off his feet while he's nursing. His skin is so soft.

They were so tiny!
More sleepy smiles on May 9th - 12 days old.
Meeting Uncle Greg for the first time and walks around the pond with Natalie and Lukey Do (wearing Gwendolyn's warm ups - NBD) before they flew off on a jet plane for Ohio a few days behind the rest of the fam.
My boy...14 days old.
Apparently Gwendolyn didn't think one hat was enough...
Mother's Day - May 12th.
Conrad's first mail! So cool to see his name in print. He's a real person with a SS# now!
My fabulous friend Kirsten came to visit on May 13th. She's due at the beginning of August with a little girl. I'm so excited for her and can't wait to see her as a mom. She's incredibly sweet and so genuine. So thankful our paths crossed when I first moved up here in 2006!
Everyone is a bit sleepy around here....
Attempting a sibling shot. For a second time. Thankfully we had success!

Key to taking pictures of a 2 year old - catch her on a good day!
Working outside with daddy..
Wednesday, May 15th....my first day with no help, although Tom reminded me that it doesn't really count as my first day on my own since Erin stopped by for most of the afternoon. Ha. Whatever.

We were up and dressed and fed and home from Target by 10:15. I was pretty proud of myself!
I could just eat him up when he's wearing a polo and plaid shorts.
We all survived our first (but not really) day at home alone!
All relaxed and sleepy after a sponge bath...
Sibling tummy time.
Sometimes it's hard to get work done with my 3 week old sidekick being so demanding.
Play date at Ceci's house with the girls and boys!
The Rock N Play has changed our lives! The view from my bed on May 24th.
Gwendolyn randomly started waking up really early some mornings so we do what any parents just trying to survive do...we bring her into our bed! Yes, not a good habit, but I like to take one day at a time and treasure her while she's small. Even if she does take up way more than her fair share of space.
Oh, Leo Peo...you were a loyal pet for seven years.
Family road trip down to Charles City for Memorial Day!
Fun with cousins in CC...
I love that my daughter loves animals as much as I do. That poor farm kitty being passed between two two-year-old's! Bless her heart!
Does it ever get old holding a newborn?!
Not according to Grandma and Grandpa!
Or sissy.....
Watching the Bachelorette premier with "TrishyJohn" of course.

Well kind of...hard to watch with a two year old constantly up in your business, right Trisha? *smile
May 28th - four weeks old!
I think it's safe to say that Conrad Cross is thriving....
Story time in our bed.
She asks to hold him and runs and gets the pillow all the time. It was later at night so I had to use my flash, which always makes Gwendolyn close her eyes. Just love this pic though...look at him! Look at them!
More bedtime stories on May 30th. You learn how to multi-task really quickly when you have two kiddos!
My mom said Conrad had lost his newborn look, which I didn't believe until I saw the difference in pictures. Ok, I finally admit he looks more like a baby now and less like a newborn.

I will not cry. I will not cry.

May 1st compared to May 30th....

What a month! And here we are at June 21st already...I have such great motivation and intentions every single morning and then before you know it, it's 5 pm and I have only accomplished one or two things on my ever growing to do list. One day at a time though and always trying to rest in the comfort that there are only a few things that are of true and lasting value - if I accomplish those things during the day, then I'm right where God wants me. Feeding my soul changes everything!

Happy Friday friends!
